Keratin is a protein found in the hair cortex that we’re naturally born with and slowly lose over time due to different products, chemical services, and different weather elements. Keratin acts as a protective barrier against humidity and gives our hair its natrual shine. Organic keratin is found in humans hair, nails, and a birds beak. Keratin treatments fill the gaps in the hairs cortex where the natural keratin has been depleted, causing the two to bond and restore your strands to be smooth and silky.
Is Keratin For You?
Who would be good to receive a keratin treatment? Those with frizzy, dull, and hair that takes beyond hours to dry. As we’re getting into summer and lots of humidity, a keratin treatment would be perfect for those who desire their hair to be low maintenance. A keratin treatment will allow you to reduce drying time, allowing you to get out the door faster with sleek, frizz-free hair.
It’s also good to know for those with curly hair, the keratin won’t permanently straighten it out, since that’s a different service and hundreds of dollars Keratin will help the curl pattern and give you smooth and frizz free curls and waves.
Now, it’s important to find a keratin treatment without formaldehyde. Many keratin treatments, or Brazilian blowouts, use formaldehyde as the main straightening ingredient within the solution. Formaldehyde is a cancer causing agent and can irritate the skin and body when injested.
Keratin Care
A keratin treatment usually lasts around 6 months, with proper care, meaning no shampoos and conditioners with sulfates. The less shampoos you do will be less abrasive to the keratin. You should also avoid putting your hair up tightly, since it will create a bend.
The service will last around 2-3 hours depending on the hair type, and the hair can’t be rinsed for 72 hours after this service. The longer you let the keratin sit, the longer and stronger it will be. It’s important to know that you can get color and keratin in one service, and of course a haircut! If you’re doing color we can apply that before we start the service, and then go in with the treatment.
We start the keratin treatment off by rinsing and clarifying the hair and then applying the keratin treatment itself and let it sit under heat for 35 minutes. After it’s done processing, we’ll then blow dry the hair causing it to soak up all the keratin treatment. Once the hairs really dry you then straighten each section to lock in the treatment and gives you a beautiful, straight look.
Benefits of a Keratin Treatment
The biggest benefit that most clients say is they love the smoothness of the treatment and how it gets rid of all the frizz and really controls the hair. This is achieved by the keratin smoothing the hair cuticle. Those with thick and unruly hair claim it’s more manageable and cut them down styling time. The keratin fills in the empty gaps where the keratin has depleted, resulting in stronger strands that won't split or break and encourages hair growth.
